The appointment ceremony of the famous translator Professor LIN Shaohua is held in room 104 of Science and Technology building on November 11th. Guests present are secretary of Party General Branch of School of Foreign Languages LIU Fang, dean of the School Professor FAN Weiwei, academic leader of Japanese major Professor WANG Qiuhua, department head of Japanese major Associate Professor WANG Runmei, Associate Professor CHEN Huiling from Japanese Culture Research Center, and teachers’ representative KE Zikan.
Secretary LIU Fang first extends her heartfelt thanks to Professor LIN Shaohua on behalf of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and School of Foreign Languages for his sparing time from his tight schedule to visit HUST and accept the invitation. Secretary LIU also hopes that Professor LIN can play a positive role in the development of the Japanese and Translation and Interpreting majors. Then, Professor FAN issues the letter of appointment. Afterwards, Professor LIN gives his appointment speech passionately and humorously in which he shares the stories between HUST and him. He emphasizes that the strong cultural atmosphere and humanistic feelings, as well as the practical and innovative school spirit of HUST are the reasons why he accepts the invitation by saying “What HUST values most is not various certificates but man!” He also expresses his happiness to be appointed an adjunct professor of HUST.
LIN Shaohua, a professor of Ocean University of China, is a celebrated Japanese literature translator, writer and scholar. He has translated over 90 pieces of works including 41 collected works of Haruki Murakami, and works of Natsume Sōseki, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, Kawabata Yasunari, InoueYasushi, Kaii Higashiyama, etc. His translation is appreciated for the beautiful words and grasping of source texts’ atmosphere. Except for translation, he writes for newspapers and magazines as well. He himself also publishes several collected works such as Homesickness and Conscience etc.
After the ceremony, Professor LIN gives an academic lecture to the students and teachers centering on his research paths and methods. His humor and sagacity win everyone’s applause. (School of Foreign Languages, 11/28/2014)
